HEALTH TRANSPARENCY BILL 2019

Queensland’s elderly residents are set to benefit as the Palaszczuk Government introduced ground breaking legislation.

Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services Steven Miles introduced the Health Transparency Bill 2019 last week saying that these laws would ensure people in aged care were treated with dignity.

“What happened at Earle was disgraceful, it isn’t good enough and it can’t be allowed to happen again, he said.

“These corporations have been allowed to run amok. Putting profits before people. Feeding residents on $6 a day and letting staffing levels fall dangerously low.

“This Bill will let Queenslanders know just how many staff are at an aged care facility, if they refuse to tell us we’ll advise the public on the website.

“And for our 16 publicly owned and operated aged care facilities we will mandate staff to patient ratios.

”The Federal Government knew that Earle Haven was in trouble but they didn’t act, now they’re opposing our legislation.”

Member for Cairns, Michael Healy said that this was about making aged care better for our loved ones.

“Queenslanders deserve the best, and these laws are about making sure we can guarantee that in the future,” he said.

“We all age and we will all need to access these services as we get older.

“we cannot let what happened in Earle Haven happen again, it was disgraceful and we need to hold these facilities accountable.

“People in Cairns are terrified about what’s going to happen to their mums, their dads, their grandparents, or themselves when they need to access aged care.
