QBuild was once the breeding ground for apprentices to blue collar trades in Queensland.
In a landmark decision by the Palaszczuk Government, it’s set to deliver once more.
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the Premier’s commitment to rebuild QBuild will provide secure jobs for Cairns locals and address declining apprenticeship rates.
“The LNP devastated QBuild when they stripped it of more than 1,500 jobs,” Mr Healy said.
“This destroyed its ability to provide safe, responsive trade services throughout the state.
“While they destroyed trade work, we are rebuilding it.
“We will employ 20 apprentices and 80 qualified tradies every year while also reinvigorating regional depots across the state.
“Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Caboolture – and right here in Cairns - will all become hubs for apprenticeships.”
Mr Healy said the Palaszczuk Government was delivering on an election commitment to re-establish the apprenticeship program.
“Last year, the Premier took the most significant step of redefining Building and Asset Services staff as frontline workers.
“When floods and fires hit our city, these men and women are often the first responders, rebuilding local schools, hospitals and social housing.
“They do the work the private sector finds unprofitable and in conditions where private companies won’t work.”
Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said this announcement builds on the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to re-establish the apprenticeship program.
“We’re prioritising regional Queensland and high youth unemployment areas, delivering apprenticeships and direct employment on maintenance and upgrade programs,” he said.
“The jobs record between Labor and the LNP couldn’t be clearer.
“The Palaszczuk Government is backing our frontline workers rather than sacking them.
“We are taking direct action to address youth unemployment.
“Most importantly, we believe in decent, stable, secure jobs.
“Government trains excellent construction apprentices, and under the Palaszczuk Government, QBuild will be a modern, efficient and accountable organisation.”
