Prime Minister urged to bail out Virgin Airlines to save Cairns jobs

Member for Cairns Michael Healy has today called on the Federal Government to ensure the future of Virgin Airlines Australia following the COVID-19 outbreak. Mr Healy said Prime Minister Scott Morrison should take immediate action to safeguard tourism jobs in Cairns. “Competition in the airline market is crucial to our tourism industry,” he said. “If Virgin Airlines goes bust due to the coronavirus outbreak, the cost of flights to REGION will surge. “This will threaten thousands of local jobs. “That’s why I’m calling on the Federal Government to provide urgent support to Virgin Airlines.” Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the Federal Government must give Queenslanders an assurance that Virgin Airlines will make it through the COVID-19 crisis. “The last thing Australia wants is because of Covid-19, we end up with a monopoly in our skies again,” she said. “We need to do all we can to ensure that both airlines in Australia survive the coronavirus crisis. “Everyone in the tourism industry that lived through the collapse of Ansett knows that having competition in our skies will help the industry rebuild faster once we get through this.”
